The Principles of Spiritual Victory

The Principles of Spiritual Victory (Joshua 6:1-21)

1Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

2Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

6So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” 7And he ordered the army, “Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

8When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

12Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

15On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! 17The city and all that is in it are to be devoteda to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. 18But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

20When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. 21They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

Introduction

  1. The Jericho warfare reveals the principles of spiritual victory to us. Jericho points to the world just like the Ziggurat of Babel tower. So the warfare means the spiritual warfare in Christian life. When we follow to the principles that the text suggests , we can overcome our struggling warfare.

  2. What are the principles of victory?

First principle, it is to trust the promise of God wholeheartedly.

  1. Verse 20 says “when the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.” Israel occupied their enemy by depending on the promise of God that God Himself shall attach their enemies to their hand, even if they had no any weapons and did not take the defending strategy but the attacking strategy.

  2. The promise is the covenant of God. it is the one side promise of God to his people. Such principle, “If you do it, I shall fulfill my will through you” is revealed in the covenant of God repeatedly, as Genesis 3:15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspringe and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” . In John 3:16 “For God so loved the world,i that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” we can find the same principle.

3)What is the victorious life of the Christian ? it is to trust the promise of the Scripture faithfully. This is true faith that Holy Spirit provides to us. Hebrew 11:6 says “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Biblical faith is to depend the promise unconditionally. The promise has the same authority of God. The promise is the Scripture. When we listen to the Word of God, we have to accept it unconditionally in our heart. Actually this faith comes out of Holy Spirit to us. Why did Jesus commend Mary more than Martha? “she chose better thing than you“ because she knew the method to listen to the word of God. She received the Word of God unconditionally and also she enjoyed it in her heart. This is the meaning of trust.

4) Our spiritual life is very simple. It is to listen to the Word of God that is the Scripture, the text as the living word of God. Then we can understand the real meaning in our heart.

As we know look at the response of the Lord. Jn 6: reveals the wonderful; event that five bread and two fish feed above 5000 people. Then the people concentrated on the miracle phenomena, but our lord pointed the Scripture. “So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Then although the disciples did not understand the meaning fully, their heart was wandering and anybody departed from him. Then the Lord “ Do you leave from me? Peter told the Lord “68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, “ Here, we can find that to believe is first than understanding. 69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” When we believe unconditionally, we can understand it automatically. Why? The unconditional faith is the present of Holy Spirit to us. This is true faith.

A certain claimes that I believe the word after I prove it. It is wrong. It is the main point of classical apologetic as the Clement of Alexandria claimed. But we first of all, to believe first makes us known it as Tertullian claimed in his apologetic. The scripture stressed that to trust unconditionally is primary thing in our lives.

Now if we believe in the Word of God, it is the wonderful grace that Holy Spirit provide us. “We admit the order, that is, to believe makes us to know. This principle is very important to overcome our present issues in our lives. So we have to cast ourselves to the Word of God unconditionally. Although we can not understand it, we believe in it, because God commanded to me.

Second principle, it is to obey the command of God.

  1. Verse 3 reveals that as they turn around the city one time per day and seven times at the seventh day and shout out, then the city was destroyed. (16-19) And accordingly they executed their ministry in the city according to the direction of God.(17-19) Both the destruction and the arrangement were executed by obeying of God’s order. The command of God is the main center in all things. At the any situation it is important to proclaim the word of God. If the word of God stays at the place, it works absolutely. But it does not work in it, it is nothing. So James confessed that “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” (4:13-15) “ This is the wisdom. This is the way of solution of any problems. The power of spiritual life come s to us out of the obedience of the word of God. So the most insightful person is the man of obedience.

  2. What do you think of Samuel’s claim, “ the obedience is better than the offering.” It is not the word that despises the worship. It means that the obedience is the foundation of worship. Without having the obeying heart, our worship shall lose the meaning in our action as Cain did in Genesis 4:. Cain offered his crop to the Lord. But he did not offer himself to God because he had no the obeying heart. Disobedience of the Word of God makes us to rebel the God’s authority. Actually his external offering have no any problems because we can admit that his offering is the life of grain, just like the blood of the lamb. What was his problem? It is the false faith. Hebrew11:6 says “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. “ Where does the faith stay? It depends on the obeying heart. So the obedience is the life of whole life of Christian life. So Obeying heart makes us to offer our body as living sacrifice in our lives. If our God commands something to us, obey it with our heart, with our life, with our wisdom and with our power. Then you can find you have the power of God in your life. We cannot deceive our living God. and also we can not deceive our neighbors finally. Their false attitude, their unfaithful character surely should be appeared iobviously because God reveals in the world. “26“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. “(Mt10:26-29) This word is very horrible Word and very trembling word. The text points that Israelite obedience is the main secret of spiritual overcome in the warfare. The same stream should be continued.

Third principle is to surrender to God.

  1. What is the principle of victory? The unconditional trust and the voluntary obedience is the way of the spiritual victory. (Joshua 1:8) So God stressed the first command to Joshua. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” It is surrender to God. Destroying the city is not the ultimate goal of God. The miracle affair is not the purpose of God’s work. After these things the surrendering attitude is very important. Why? Did God want that they destroyed all enemies in the city, the Canaanite people, goods, gold, silver and garments made by synar. Why did God stress them? Because all goods in the city is the property of God, God’s possession. It means we have to teach that surrendering is the key of spiritual warfare. What is the most serious sins in our lives it must be boasting, pride, arrogance. After they occupyed the city they could fall down into the corrupted pot, those are; pride, arrogance and boasting, Then surrendering attitude is to overcome the inner Jericho, the sinful desire. So when we praise hymn 338, “Father I stretch my hands to thee” we enjoy the peaceful state in our heart.

  2. After the wonderful victory, if they do not learn the surrendering attitude, he shall easily incline into the corrupted state as pure food without being preserved. So we should love to follow surrendering heart to every thing in our lives.

  3. In our school life we have to be trained by trust unconditionally and obeying the Word of God and surrendering attitude in our lives.

Actually I feel some darkness of our school our students because some students are wondering in the school life. Moreover I saw that Dr. Ezra felt strongly deeply for his students go astray in their ministry. I could feel his love to his students. One day, I had observed our students’ state in our school. What is their problems? Food? Money? Clothe? Book? lecture? No. their problem is to stay in inner false attitude before God. there are the trust, the obedience and the surrender issues.

Do not you think so? Now I challenge to you. Do you overcome your spiritual enemy in your life? if you learn this principle and apply now, you can find the wonderful world.

Conclusion:

Cambodia churches met lots of temptation. Among them the momonism is working in the church. If our school is pursuing it, our school shall be destroyed absolutely. If anybody loses his privilege, he get nothing in his life. When we study the word of God, we have to keep the trembling and the fear before God. So we have to follow this principles today too.

Let’s pray.

The Warfare That Builds the Holiness

The Warfare that builds the holiness (Joshua 5:1-15)

Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

2At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” 3So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.

4Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. 5All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.

9Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgalc to this day.

10On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 11The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 12The manna stopped the day afterd they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

13Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

14“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lorde have for his servant?”

15The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Introduction

  1. After Israel walked across the Jordan River, they needed the holiness before God. Why? Because the power that overcome the kings of Canaan in the center of the city, Jericho should be depended upon the holiness. To both Moses and Joshua the Lord required the holiness before God and on the holy land. So they should take off their sandals at the holy land. After Joshua and his people crossed the Jordan River, theythemselves should be prepared by holiness for the future warfare.

  2. How could they become holy?

First, by receiving the circumcision, as the mark of the first covenant, they become holy.

  1. Holiness is not to add some things but to keep the essential relationship of salvation faithfully.

  2. Holiness begins with foundation of God’s grace. Without holiness no grace, because holiness belongs to only God. So The word of God teaches that you must be holy as God is holy. This word includes the promise that only God can make them to be holy. God is the purpose of holiness as well as the means of holiness. So God needed their holiness in their whole lives for his holy warfare, holy land, holy system and holy purpose. So God commanded to Israel to take circumcision before they started to fight with the Canaanite tribes.

What is the circumcision? It is the sign of covenant of God’s people. Also it is a symbolism that points holiness in Christ. It reveals the meaning of the bapism in the new covenant. Of course, the baptism points to the baptism of Holy Spirit that is expressed on the baptism of the water. When we read the passage of baptism in Matthew 28:18-20, I Corinthian 12:14 and Rom 6:6, first of all we have to understand the meaning of the baptism of Holy Spirit. Without the baptism of Hoy Spirit any symbolism shall not take any meaningfulness. Actually the circumcision was very important in Israel, the church of the wilderness or, the church of Canaan in order to be holy.

  1. In our ministry to keep holy is foundation for our complete salvation, So Paul stressed that offer your body(the whole life) to the God as living sacrifice. And Rome 6:6 commands, Offer yourself to the Lord as the weapon of righteousness.”

Why? Because now we serve holy ministry, holy works, holy mission field and holy war and holy method, we have to live holily. How about our school life? Is this the secular work? No, it is the holy work. So we should devote ourselves to it as living sacrifice. Unless we offer our whole things to this thing we can not know the truth and he may fall down into the more serious seat. So our school emphasizes the godly life in studying and ministry.

My beloved student, Did you have the stigma of circumcision in your life? What is your proof? It is the total devotion to the Lord. Then we can overcome against all enemies and build the kingdom of God in the world. This is the reality to enjoy the millennium grace in the world.

Concentrate on the godly time in your personal life. in our life many stumbling block attacks to us. However we have to sustain to keep devotional time. Then we are powerful in the world as a lion.

Second, by eating the fruit of victory, they become holy.

1)Verse 12 says “12The manna stopped the day afterd they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.”

The descending manna was stopped as they ate the fruit of victory through their spiritual war. After they entered into canaan, they did not need manna and trail eggs. Because they tasted reality of Canaan’s blessing. What is it? It is the presence of God in the actual life. Although they did not the supernatural foods they ate the food in Canaan. In fact it is the best miraculous food in our lives.

What are the victorious fruit in Canaan? We have to escape out of symbolism into the reality. In a word, it is the presence of God. Immanuel.

  • In the New Testament we know the grace that God provided to us. Those are, forgiveness, power, purpose and peace. This is the real honey and real milk in Christ. Now we enjoy the wonderful grace in Christ. We have to stand firm on the foundation and should enjoy the real grace in our lives, the grace of gospel, the unspeakable joy. This is the gospel of Christ.

  • So our Lord Jesus Christ exhorts us “Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”(Mt 9:17) “ Do you know this meaning in your life? The new age needs new means and new styles. It is the reality of Canaan.

  • Then we can be holy. We can prepare to fight to our enemies.

  1. We should get the renewal power through the present victory of their situation. Moment victory

Third, when we pursue the chief of military, Christ, we can get the victory of holiness.

  1. Occupying Canaan was accomplished by pursuing the Lord because Christ is the holiness of our lives. I Corinthian 1:30 says “And because of hime you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. At the other time I had thought that the commander of military points the pre-incarnated Christ. Today we lives in his dominion. When he ruled over us it is holiness. What is our works in Him in order to be holy? Only we should abide in him. It means to live in him by intimacy with him by praying and obeying the word of God.

  2. How could we do to be holy in our lives? In a word, we have to offer our body to the Lord as living sacrifice.(Rom12:1-2 I appeal to you therefore, brothers,a by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.b2Do not be conformed to this world,c but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.d)

It points to offer our whole things, those are; emotion, intellect, and volition and also our all character, all power and all talent as a animal slayed by a priest. Then our Lord can receive the burnt offering actually as a spiritual aroma. Then the Lord works in us for his glory. Before we offered our whole things to him, nothing shall be accomplished for his holiness.

Conclusion:

1) Circumcision, Eating Canaanite foods, and following the commander, Jesus Christ shall make us to become holy life in our lives. Already we abide in the real meaning of circumcision and enjoy the real abundant food and to obey our Lord Jesus in our daily life.

2) My Beloved Student, In our school life, we have to try to be holy, godly life by offering my whole body as living sacrifice to the Lord. May the grace of the Lord be with you all today.

The Memorial Stone of Victory

The Memorial Stone of Victory (Joshua 4:1-24)
by Rev. White Young Jeon

2014,2.16 Lord’s day Worship

1When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, 2“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, 3and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.”

4So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

8So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. 9Joshua set up the twelve stones that had beena in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.

10Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 11and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. 12The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them. 13About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.

14That day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.

15Then the Lord said to Joshua, 16“Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law to come up out of the Jordan.”

17So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”

18And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before.

19On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. 20And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. 21He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ 23For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Seab when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. 24He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.”

Introduction:

1)God pleased that the children of Israel keep the command of the Lord by establishing the memorial stone at Gilgal. Verses 5-7 say “and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

2)What should they hand down to their children?

First, they should teach that the victory comes out of only following God’s guide.

1)Verse 7 says “tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” Crossing of the Red Sea means the salvation out of sins and the justification but crossing of Jordan river means sanctification that is, the growth towards the salvation. As they crossed over the river Jordan, they needed to deny the self and to bear their cross. Now God command that they build the memorial stones in order to teach that the victory way is to follow the guidance of the Lord.

In the Christian life to obey the word of God is the essential of all victories. What is the victory? it is the accomplishment of God’s will, God’s purpose and God’s plan. Through remembering the great picture of crossing the Jordan river God reveals the methodology of spiritual victory in the earth. The victory comes out of the almighty God and the obedience is the channel of God’s victory.

It is very simple to obey the word of God but it is the only way to get the glorious victory.

Ex: In the event of crossing red sea, what is the method of salvation for Israel? It must be the obedience. Then God commanded that they should walk toward the dry land in the sea. They could walk in the water on the way God provided for them. But in the text God commanded that as they walked on the water the way was made automatically. When the ark of covenant will be approached on the water, the Jordan river was cut off. When we follow the word of God we can meet to cut off the problems as Israel did at the Jordan river. What did they do? It was to follow the Ark of covenant. To follow the ark points the obedience of the Word of God.

As we know, when we serve the Lord in our ministry, it is very important to obey his words in our lives. The king Saul was failed because of his small obedience in his life. One day the Lord commanded him to kill every enemies before God. But he hated to obey them completely. He left many cattle and few leaders for his covet. Then Samuel rebuked him to teach that the obedience is better than the offering. Only the obedience is able to sustain the continuous victory in the ministry.

Such thing reveals in the ministry of the Lord repeatedly. The obedience is the channel of the miracle. In Jn 2:1-10 we can find that the obedience of the servants made the wonderful thing in the event. They who obeyed the command of the Lord, can know the wonderful sign in his ministry.

Such fact reveals in our daily lives. What is the normal Christian life? The obedience is the main point of Christian life that was based on the authority of the word of God.

How can we obey the Word of God in our lives? We can get the answers out of the Scripture. We must admit the authority of the Word. We have to understand it. We should endure to keep the Word of God. What is the main cause of disobedience? It is the pleasure. According to Mt 13: , the good soil is to receive the word of God and to keep it and endure to product the fruit.

Second, they should teach to believe on Almighty God.

  1. Opening the water and closing the water was executed by God not by their craft skill, only they should obey the command of God. (18) “And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before.”
  2. According to moving of the ark of covenant the miraculous stream was flown in the situation. It means that the Almighty God could do that. Who is the Lord of Israel? He is the creator, the provider and the redeemer for his people. Above of all, they and their children need to learn the knowledge of God fully. This is the foundation of their lives and their ministry. Actually the true knowledge of God must be the character of eternal life.(Jn17:3) In fact, we grow up in knowing God, in the knowledge of the abundant life. So if any body abide in grace, he shall understand living God deeply. He shall enjoy his love, his faithfulness, his mercy and his righteousness in his heart.

When we started our regeneration, as Peter confessed that you are Christ as well as the son of living God, we know God progressively in the illumination of Holy Spirit. So Paul asked for Ephesian church “ give them the spirit of revelation to know God.” The knowledge of God is the purpose of our salvation.

In our Christian life we have to pursue to know God. Why? Because it is the way to enjoy the eternal life and to imitate the image of God, righteousness, mercy and faithfulness.

In fact, we find that every pictorial revelation appeared by the mode of event focuses on the knowledge of God. For example, what is the focus(purpose) of the event that changed the water into the wine? John 2:11 says “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.“ What does it mean? It means that it reveals to know Christ as son of God. Then his disciples believe on him.

As the same stream the text focused on not the salvation or, some special event but on the knowledge of God.

So Exodus 15 :1-3 says “1Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying,“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his ridera he has thrown into the sea. 2The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. 3The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name.”

The passage points to the importance of God’s knowledge. The event, crossing the red sea proves that the Lord is almighty God. As we know, Joshua proclaimed that I and my family shall serve Jehovah continuously. And he compelled that you have to choose your worshipping object.

In Cambodia we have to know our worshipping object , almighty God very well by accepting the revelation of Scripture and should hand down the knowledge to the children to glorify God. Do you believe in it?

Third, they should keep the fear of the Lord eternally.

It is important to know God’s lead and His omnipotence but it is more important to take the fear of the Lord. (24) “He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.”

To have the fear of the Lord is the purpose of our work.(Philiph2:12-13) “12Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. “ This is the core of our knowledge, our wisdom, our activities and our all thinking. Proverb 1:7 says “the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom, knowledge and insight.” Actually it is the meaning of the faith in the New Testament. The belief should reveal the fear of the Lord. Of course, the fear is compounded by the affection and trembling. If we have the fear in our heart, it proves the eternal life in our heart. So we are not devouring greedy people but sincere people in our live that completed our salvation with the fear and the trembling. This is the way of the eternal life. The false way despises the spiritual tension. According to II Corinthian 7:9-13 says “9As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.

Here are two kinds of anxiety. The First is worldly anxiety, and the second is the spiritual anxiety. How can we discern the fact? The criteria is the true fear. spiritual tension. What is the purpose of the children education? It is to make them to live the righteousness and justice.

What is the Christian education? It aims on the fear of God. that consisted of righteousness and justice as Abraham did in Genesis. (Gen 18:19).

Why do we teach the word of God, the Scripture? Only the Scripture reveal the God and the character, rigorousness, justice and love to us. In fact the Scripture is the method of grace and the purpose of grace. Why did the Lord stress the self denial and cross bearing in Christian life? through these things we can get the grace of righteousness and justice.

Conclusion:

(1) In Cambiodian Christian ministry, we should think of three elements of the Christian education. We have to learn the obedience, the knowledge of God and we have to have the fear of God and transfer these things to our children as Timothy did it. II Timothy 1:4-5 says “As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. 5I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 “ one grand mom had true faith and was transferred to his daughter, later it was handed down to Timothy. Our contemporary church needs to hand out such stream to our children.

(2) May the grace of God be with you all.

Cross Your Jordan River!

Cross Your Jordan River! (Joshua 3:1-17)  2/15/2014

Introduction:

  1. At the other day, I had explained that the reality of crossing of Jordan river is the self-denial and cross bearing in our lives. So we have to caution ourselves for sinful desire. In this time we treat the reality of Jordan river in the redemptive symbolism, crossing of Jordan river. What do you think of it? I think that the Jordan river means the symbols of devil, death and sin in the light of redemptive history, the stream of our salvation. When we meditate this event we should see the reality of the symbolism for the abundant grace of our salvation that Good provide in Christ.

First, we had crossed the stream of sins, evil and conviction, the main cause of our condemnation.

It means that our every sin had been cleaned by the merit of Christ, our savior. So we claim wonderful promise as Apostle Paul did in Roman chapter 8: 31-37 says “31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.j35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Rom 3: 21-22 says “21But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. “ If we confessed that I believe in the fact(Christ’s merit) and confess that Jesus, my Lord, already we are saved out of miserable sin, evil and conviction.(IJohn1:9) Just like Israel crossed the Jordan river, we had crossed the stream of our sins by faith. We have the eternal life, we had been moved to the life out of the dead and also we shall not be condemned.(Jn5:24)

Ex: Buddhism teach that the sins is like the full river stream, the big mount and the much sand mount. But they claim that the good behavior of a man can cross across the sin stream. So they exhort that the salvation shall come out of the merit of human. What do you think of it? Actually the teaching reveals in any religions, Confucius, Hinduism, Moslem and Natural Spiritism except the Scripture. However, the Scripture reveals that any merit of the man cannot clean, at least, only one sin in the his heart, in other word, he cannot calm down the still small voice of conscience. Actually do we clean up our sin in our lives by our merit? Absolutely we can do that. After the king David committed the sever adultery and murder in his life, he confessed that he was struggled by his sin in his awakening soul. “3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.(Ps 51:3-6) He found the root of sins, and the depth of the sin and the power of the sin. Through the process he could find the only method of cleaning his sin. What is this? It is only the hyssop that points the merit of Christ, the tool to apply his merit to the heart. It means the merit of Christ. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

(Ps51:7)

Do you believe in it?

One day, David confessed that “ blessed is the man who was covered his sin by the merit of Christ.”(Rom4:7-8) 7“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
8blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

True repentance makes us to approach at the place. Did you cross the stream of sin in your life? Did you repent your sins before God? When did you confess your sins recently? Again we have to cross the Jordan river of sins by faith, “ if we confess our sins we…” through the process we shall be changed into the image of God, righteousness, mercy and faithfulness.

Actually we receive the wonderful grace of Holy Spirit from the heaven as the Elisha did in the Jordan River. He needed the process in his calling. He passionately seek the grace of the double inspiration of Elijah’s spirit. “What do you want ? he confessed the double of the Spirit ( the power of Holy Spirit). It is very difficult to take in his life. Before his teacher was passed away he cannot receive it. But he did not give up his demand to God. the scripture did not mention to him about the fact that he received the double gift. It is in science. But the revelation used the symbolism to make us understood it. He crossed Jordan river by dividing the stream by hitting with the garment of his teacher. Then before his action he broke out his clothes . Their friends saw that action and understood that Elisha received the double spirit in his life. This is our ministry. We have to cross the stream of our sins stream by faith moment by moment.

Our school is a seminary. The seminary is the garden of prophets that the man of God who have God’s calling should be broken their external sinful cloth by repentance and faith. In other words we have to change our life in the process of our training course. We are very shameful to listen to treat the miserable issue, the relationship between the male and the female. We have to cross the Jordan river. Jesus died on the cross to give the wonderful cleaning to us.

Second, we have to cross the dead stream of Jordan river. Jordan river points the physical death and spiritual death and the eternal death. It is very wonderful thing to die us on the cross in order to solve this death. Look at the man of God, Paul. He proclaimed” where is the poison of death?” The death can overcome our Christian life in the earth. So we are the strongest person in the earth. This is our privilege. Already we crossed over the Jordan river by faith.

Actually we meet many death in our situation in heart, in family in relationship and in the ministry. Then we have to apply the power to them.

As the Lord commanded to the Nazaro “ come out of there!” we should command to the dead things in order to establish the Word of God. Although we meet the dead situation we challenge to them because God prepared everything for us. So Christian can live activating life in his life. We have to assure that we crossed the Jordan river by resurrection of Christ out of death, because we were died with Christ and resurrected with Christ. And also we have living hope in Christ Jesus because the living stream came out of our heart by the works of Holy Spirit.

Ex: Ezekiel 37: reveals the flowing stream in the church. Where does it flow out of to the temple? The living water came out of the bottom of flow of the temple. And flow to the outside of temple and the sea of the death. Then the event of the life happened in the dead body, the dry tree had the renewal in Christ Jesus.

When we serve the church humbly, we can find wonderful life in our heart. The Acts reveals the revival that the work of revival was happened out of the dead situation, suffering, trouble, persecution and struggles in the church. The work was depended on the resurrected power of Jesus Christ. although the primitive church fall down into the miserable state the work of resurrected grace was happened in the world. This is the reality of crossing the Jordan river. At our last day before God we have to cross the Jordan river boldly to enter to the heaven. Then we should walk across on the water by faith because our Joshua, Jesus Christ, opened in the water of absolute death to make us resurrected into the eternal life.

We belive in it.

Third, we overcome the power of Satan and the authority of hades.

  1. Another meaning of crossing of Jordan river is to conquers Satan and his power. It is very wonderful thing to reveal the important truth by using the Symbolism mode. Crossing Jordan river reveal to cleans all sins and to overcome all temptation, lastly it means to overcome the power of Satan and authority of hades.

What does the red sea mean? Although the red sea is real, we can understand the reality in the light of the Apostolic interpretation. According to I Corinthian 10: 1-2 the red sea points devil, death and sin, as the deep state in the first vision of Zechariah. (1:8) So we should observe the crossing of red sea in Israel’s history in order to understand the wonderful redemption. So we claim that it teaches the one side meaning of our salvation, that is, the state before the salvation, curse and sins. From where were we saved? It was the most wicked state. In the most miserable state we are saved.

So when we fall down into miserable state we can have the wonderful hope because already we were saved out of absolute curse. What is your destruction state in your life? Although your mind claims that I cannot do all things, you should see the original revelation. The cross of Jesus Christ can do that. Actually the crossing event of red sea and Jordan river teaches wonderful salvation. Do you believe in it?

Ex. Look at a paralyzed person who was fallen into the very miserable state. It is like the state of darkness, Satan, curse, punishment, sin and hell. When they approached to the Lord with passion and humility. Their Jordan river, their struggling things disappeared by the Christ ‘s proclamation of remission. Immediately he was healed by the grace of God.

When we meet some struggles about our present lives, we should remember his victory that removed all sins by his merit and also applied it to that issue.

By faith our present troubles have been disappeared as we accept it to our present life. Do you believe in it?

In the school life we have to learn the many subjects, but more important thing is to learn crossing of Jordan river by true repentance and true faith in front of God. Assure that you already overcome every sins, every absolute death and also every temptation of Satan.

Among them we stress to overcome the temptation that loses the holiness and purity. So Paul exhorted to Timothy, “ escape the desire of youth season.” “ I order to overcome the stimulated sins we have to devote ourselves to the studying the Word of God. How can we overcome the several desire? It is to enjoy the truth word of God.

Conclusion:

I saw that many Cambodian enjoy the gamble in the village. I understood such pleasure of their situation. Continually if they enjoy such thing finally they shall be perishable. They should cross the cross the Jordan river of pleasure in his life. If they return to Christ Jesus the Bible they can overcome the pleasure to taste the wonderful rejoices in his heart. It is the joy that the world cannot provide to them it is the unspeakable joy. If they experienced the grace he can live living hope, spiritual richness and also the resurrected power in Christ Jesus.

May the power of grace be with you all to cross the Jordan river of sin, death and Satan.

Let’s pray.

The Sign of Crossing Jordan River

The Sign of Crossing Jordan River (Joshua 3:1-17) 2014.2.11 morning prayer

1Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubitsa between you and the ark; do not go near it.”

5Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”

6Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them.

7And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. 8Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’ ”

9Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God. 10This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. 11See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. 12Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.”

14So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 16the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.

Introduction:

The miracle of Scripture has the above meaning than curious phenomena. The miracles belongs to the pictorial revelation or, the explanation revelation because God reveal his will to his own people through the miracle . What is the miracle? We can say that the miracle proves that our God has the supernatural power to create, to provide and to redeem.

Why did Jehovah reveal many miracles to Israel in the wilderness. Their lives consisted of lots of miracle, super natural power. Among eating, drinking, sleeping and walking and fighting of daily life they had experienced the wonderful events. Theses miracles proved obviously the supernatural power of God as sign in the church.

Among them crossing of red sea reveals the wonderful redemption that the church were delivered out of sins. This is the interpretation of the Apostle. Actually the event of crossing the red sea stressed on the abundant salvation in the event., the remission, justification and baptism as a sign of salvation.

In the text we can find another crossing. It is crossing of Jordan river. What do you think of the crossing Jordan river? In this time we have to think the reality of crossing Jordan river. What does it mean?

First, crossing of Jordan River means the another aspect of church salvation.

Verse says “And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.”

  1. 14So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 16the water from upstream stopped flowing.”

  2. It is very great event that reveal the reality of salvation of his people again as crossing the red sea. So we can interpret this symbolic event as another aspect of salvation. I Corin.10:1-5 explain that Paul interpreted that the church was baptized under the cloud and the water. For I want you to know, brothers,a that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.” What does it mean? Crossing the red sea is a symbolism or, a pictoral revelation. What is the reality of symbolism? It is the salvation of his people out of miserable sin. In the event we can learn the character of our wonderful salvation, that is, to be saved out of miserable sins. Here crossing Jordan river point that detailed salvation in his people who depend on the fundamental salvation. Actually after we were saved out of our sins we taste the actual grace in our every area by the work of Holy Spirit. In other words we shall be saved out of our sinful desire. Just it is the reality of crossing of Jordan river. Crossing of red sea points the baptism, justification but crossing of Jordan river self-denial, crossbearing those are the sanctification.

After we received the baptism with the water, we affirm that we are saved out of sin. Basically the baptism of water is the mark of our salvation, but more important is the baptism of Holy Spirit. What is the baptism of Holy Spirit? It means to be cleaned by the Spirit. In other word, it is the regeneration. “Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. “(Jn3:6) Can you see the kingdom now and also can you enjoy the kingdom of God? Actually the regeneration means the event baptized by Holy Spirit in our Christian life. It is the reality of crossing of red sea that is a symbolism. This symbolism relates to another symbolism, crossing of Jordan river. Actually two symbolism point the abundant character of salvation Therefor we can think two important things in that picture. As we know the united contents in a verse.

I Corin 12:13 says “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slavesd or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.“ We participate into the baptism of Holy spirit and also we enjoy the abundance of the baptism as drinking the water and eating s baptism’ grace. Refer to revelation 3:20 that explain the reality of salvation as intimate fellowship with the Lord on one table with eating it. Actually the justification is sanctification and also sanctification is justification in the salvation (baptism).

So we understand that the baptism of water of and drinking the living water out of the rock means the abundant grace of Holy Spirit and also the miracle that the Jordan river was broken means the redemption out of the sinful desire that is the factory that product always sins. What does it mean?

Second, Jordan river is the symbol of our sinful desire that product the sins.

  1. The cross of Christ cleaned up every sin once of all forever. (Gal 5:24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.) And what we remember must be happened through the holiness and the purity. According to the command, “Consecrate yourselves”(5), as we examine ourselves through the repentance and the faith shall happen some wonderful things. (3:11,14,16, 17)

11See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you.

14So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.

16the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground

  1. If the Lord cleans up our all sin, our all evil and our all punishment but leave

the sinful desire, can you overcome it by your wisdom? The Scripture says that we cannot do that. Rom7:21-25 says “21So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.” We never be able to overcome our siful desire. Our endurance, our meditation and our good behavior cannot influence to remove it out of our heart because it was very strong, stimulated and systematically.

Ex: Jesus Christ know it very well in his ministry. At Gesemaneth he prayed with his disciples to God for his cross. Then his disciples slept . Then the Lord says “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt26:41) Do you know this meaning? Most peoples misunderstood that it is physical tiring body for compassion to them. No. it is does not mean. Here sarks means the sinful desire. It cannot arrive to the standard of the Lord. It is impossible to stay there. So we have to cast it to the seat of death, demolishment. Here the Lord pointed the main problem and the solving method to them.

The method is to believe in the merit of Christ’s cross. So our Lord should bear the cross to remove the sinful desire. Paul proclaimed “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.(Rom7:15-19)“ This is the main key to remove our burning sinful desire. When only the Spirit apply it our heart we can overcome the temptation before God. So Paul thanked the Lord and praised the Lord. We have to cross our Jordan river in our lives.

For example when we have receive the temptation of stimulated things, by stealing, lairing, hating envying and sexual desiring, how can overcome them in our actual life? As our sinful desire rise in our heart we cannot control it. We have to admit that fact. At that same time we have to admit the merit power of cross. Then our thing must understand thank praise and devote ourselves to the Lord as living sacrifice. ( Rom12:1-2)

Do not follow the emotion but the will that depended on God’ will , the word of God. When we see the light of the Lord we can see our inner light. When we look at the glory of the Lord’s face we find that we shall be transformed by the work of Holy Spirit. This is the reality of crossing Jordan river.

Conclusion:

  1. My beloved student did you cross the red sea”? ad also did you cross the Jordan river in your lies? As the Israelite looked at the ark of covenant and followed the moving, they shall walk into the water as the dry land. We can overcome the sinful desire by follow the word of God in our actual life.
  2. In our school life we have to focus this thing in our studying activities.
